For same-sex couples who want to have children, the right timing of fertilization plays a crucial role. One method of artificial insemination to achieve pregnancy is home insemination or self-insemination. It is also known as the “cup method” because the freshly collected donor sperm is first collected in a cup before being inserted into the woman’s vagina with a needleless syringe. This method allows couples and singles to use insemination without medical assistance in a private setting. However, home insemination can only be successful if the woman also keeps a close eye on her ovulation time.
Anastasia lives in a same-sex relationship and knew very early on that she would like to start a family. Today we asked her about her very personal story of wanting a child.
My desire to have children was actually already in my early 20s, but I wanted to wait for the right partner. I finally met and fell in love with her in 2014. We are very happy together and quickly realized that a child would make our happiness complete. In 2016, we actively started planning to have a child. We looked for a private sperm donor on the Internet and quickly found one, despite many defeats.
Due to a family stroke of fate, we had to postpone the desire to have children again for the time being, but our donor still remained loyal to us and kept his word to help us until it worked out. So from the middle of 2017, we tried again. Unfortunately, each donation went nowhere. We tried the cup method, nothing else would have been an option for us. Our nerves were shot and people were quick to look for fault! Although I always had hope that it would work at some point, I noticed how the light inside me was getting dimmer and dimmer. At some point, my cycle no longer played along. I think that it was certainly due to the stress that I made myself subconsciously.
I tried everything that was possible and that seemed to make sense to me at that moment. All I wanted was to finally get pregnant! I tried a lot of things, e.g. cycle teas, a change in diet, ovulation tests, measuring my basal body temperature, but also relaxation music or taking folic acid and other important vitamins. But nothing helped, because I just wasn’t relaxed and was constantly under power!
Wir haben fast 2 Jahre versucht, ein Kind zu bekommen und hatten leider keinen Erfolg. Als schließlich meine Periode einfach nicht mehr kommen wollte, ich aber wusste, dass ich nicht schwanger bin, habe ich einen Frauenarzt aufgesucht. Beim Frauenarzt stand die Diagnose PCO-Syndrom im Raum, es müssten jedoch noch Tests zur Sicherstellung der Diagnose erfolgen. Gleichzeitig empfahl der Gynäkologe OvulaRing und gab mir Informationsmaterial mit, das ich mit meiner Partnerin sorgfältig durchlas. Nach ein paar Tagen Bedenkzeit haben wir uns entschlossen, OvulaRing auszuprobieren – wir wollten nichts unversucht lassen.
In the fall of last year, we ordered OvulaRing and first tried it without a donor in the next cycle to familiarize ourselves with it. At the end of the year we tried it for the first time in a cycle with 4 sperm donations – unfortunately without success. But already in the next cycle it worked: one sperm donation and directly a hit! So I got pregnant with OvulaRing in the second cycle of use.
Wir waren von Anfang an trotz kleiner Skepsis total überzeugt von OvulaRing. Ich hatte überhaupt keinen Stress mehr! Kein Erraten von Ovulationstest, ist er jetzt positiv oder nicht? Kein ständiges Temperaturmessen oder tägliches Urinieren auf einen Streifen, der mir eh nicht genau sagen kann, ob ich wirklich einen Eisprung habe.
Mit OvulaRing bin ich einfach entspannt gewesen! Ich konnte ihn auswerten, wann immer ich wollte und Zeit hatte, er hat verlässlich meine Temperatur gemessen und auch einen Eisprung erkannt. Der Ring konnte mir sagen, dass ich überhaupt einen Eisprung habe, was für eine Frau, die schwanger werden möchte, schon einmal sehr beruhigend ist. OvulaRing hat außerdem erkannt, wann ich gestresst oder zu aktiv war – somit wusste ich auch, was ich lieber ändern sollte. Außerdem stand mir bei jeglichen Fragen immer ein Ansprechpartner vom Fach zur Seite.
Ich hatte z.B. auch einen anderen Fertilitätsmonitor, der auf Ovulationstests basiert, ausprobiert, der für mich aber nicht geeignet war. Es war schon schwer genug, immer zur selben Zeit auf den Streifen zu urinieren. Durch meine Schichtarbeit zeigte er aber nie ein richtiges Ergebnis an. Ich wusste also nie, ob ich einen Eisprung habe oder ob ich ihn verpasst hatte oder das Gerät fehlerhaft war. Ich hatte einfach keine Sicherheit, wie ich sie beim OvulaRing hatte.
Die Anwendung ist wirklich kinderleicht und sehr einfach. Das Tragen ist angenehm und stört überhaupt nicht im Alltag.
Das richtige Timing, um schwanger zu werden, ist gerade bei der Bechermethode mit einem privaten Samenspender wichtig. OvulaRing hat uns dabei geholfen, die fruchtbaren Tage nicht zu verpassen.
